Venture away from the tourist trail to discover Kakku, one of Myanmar’s hidden gems. Tucked away in the Shan mountains, the collection of 2500 stupas beckon to be explored. Wander amid the 11th century site, admiring the intricately carved monuments and unlocking the mystery behind their origin.
Meet your local tour guide this morning and start your stunning tour to Kakku as you travel one hour by road to Taunggyi (capital of Shan state) then continue for about one more hour to Kakku. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of luscious, green pastures, exotic bamboo and wood houses, scenic rice paddies and plantation.
Upon Kakku, visit the Kakku Pagoda complex of more than 2000 stupas with similar shape and size. The site is believed to date back to over 2000 years ago. Take a stroll through the pagoda to explore the unique shrines made from brick and plastered with stucco. Among them, some are well-preserved, some are crumbled off, others have trees and bushes growing out them. All are put together to create a wonderful scenery to capture some good snapshots.
Despite its beauty, few tourists make it to Kakku and it is likely that no other visitors will be there. The solitude of the site and its remote location add to its allure.
